[5] How to make a great video

★ Choose the device you will use to record your video

  • Computer or Laptop
    • Computers with high-definition USB cams are preferred over smartphones for recording your video
    • For recording, we recommend you use a USB-attached cam on your computer.
    • This is because it tends to produce a higher quality video. If you need suggestions, we have good recommendations for cams you can use with your computer.
    • There are many options out there for HD webcams that attach to computers via USB that can also operate as a home video recorder (without needing to be used at all for webcamming). This option is often the way individuals will choose to record their home videos. However if you have only a *desktop* computer but not a laptop, then it makes it much more difficult to move the camera into places that are far from the desktop computer (it’s hard to take a desktop computer into the bathroom, for instance).
    • We are happy to make recommendations for you about specific cameras — just ask us for advice, it’s what we are here for!

USB Cams (for computers)

If you need a webcam for video recording, we highly recommend the Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920. It’s by far the best we’ve found after researching top models and testing them. It has sharp, 1080p video at 30 frames per second with fast autofocus and quick, accurate auto white balance, giving it the best video quality of any webcam we tested. The C920 is easy to set up on both OS X and Windows and it has handy (but entirely optional) software for both operating systems.

Most recent laptops and all-in-one desktops have a decent—sometimes even great—built-in camera, so many people don’t need a stand-alone webcam. But if your laptop’s integrated webcam is really bad (or broken), or if your desktop or display doesn’t have a camera at all, then a USB webcam that sits on top of your screen is the best option. A stand-alone webcam can provide better quality for not just recording porn, but also for video calls, streaming games, events, and more—you name it!

  • Smartphone
    • You *can* use a smartphone, but please be aware of how much space it will take up on your phone *before* you start to record. We have heard many horror stories of how someone would be putting on a great show in front of their phone that was recording them, and they had no idea that the phone stopped recording because it ran out of space. The whole scene was a waste. Don’t let this happen to you. Once you record your video and upload it, you can delete the file from your phone.
    • If you *do* use a smartphone, beware of the biggest mistake that many first-timers make… they take the video with the phone orientation up and down (vertical – with the short sides at the top and bottom). But the *correct* way to record videos is to have it horizontal (long sides of the phone at the top and bottom).
    • You can prop your smartphone up against an object so it can record you. Or you can choose to get something more sturdy. For something more sturdy, we like either the JOBY GorillaPod (this one is for small smartphones and this one is for large smartphones) or the CamRah smartphone tripod which has some cool features and can be used in a number of different ways also. There are a lot of options… you can find even more listed here.
  • DSLR camera
    • Most DSLR cameras have a video function, and they’re a great way to record video without dropping serious cash if you already have one. A DSLR intrinsically takes better video than a smartphone and works better in low light, though audio will likely still suffer a bit. As for the video quality, you can swap in different camera lenses (a wide angle or semi fish-eye lens should give you a solid view of all the action) to get a more cinematic look, so if you’re going for a classier feel for your video, a DSLR is a good option. You should consider using a tripod for these kinds of cameras. Almost all of them have a hole on the bottom that you can mount to a tripod. Some options for tripods for a DSLR camera are here.
  • Action Camera (like a GoPro)
    • Action cameras like a GoPro are perfectly suited for making your homemade video. It makes sense if you think about it: Action cameras are made to mount to things like bicycles, helmets, and cars, so they can certainly handle the action in the bedroom. Most action cameras also come with a ton of mounting options so you can get creative with your camera work. For example, you can use a tripod, mount the camera to a pole, use it underwater, or strap it to your head. They range in price dramatically, but you can snag a decent one for under a $100 to get you started. Of course, you get what you pay for. Cheaper models will have similar problems to smartphones and might struggle in low light. You also can’t really do much in the way of customizing the exposure or focus, so don’t expect to make anything too advanced. Action cameras don’t usually have viewfinders either, so it’s always a bit of a crapshoot as to how the footage will look.

★ Distance from camera

  • You should not be too far away from the camera — but also not too close. The viewers of the homemade videos should be able to see you getting into it- the facial expressions, the tension in your body…

★ Don’t start naked

  • Start out dressed (or partly dressed) in whatever your “scenario” is. And spend the first few minutes dressed and doing whatever you’re doing. Maybe you can slowly get undressed. Or maybe you decide to get undressed quickly and very intensely. Up to you, but think about what you are going to do before you begin.

★ It’s not just about your genitals

  • Don’t focus only on your genitals. Show your whole body.
  • People tend to forget to turn around sometimes and show their backsides. And their ass. Or their asshole itself.
  • They also forget to get close with the camera from time to time to show areas such as the legs, arms, underarms, belly buttons.
  • People have all kinds of fetishes. One of the biggest fetishes happens to be feet. So, even though you may not be turned on by feet, we can guarantee that someone else will be turned on by feet and may have an orgasm when they watch you simply massaging your feet as you work yourself up to an orgasmic climax with your other hand.
  • You don’t need to do the things above in every video you create… but we want you to remember that people can be turned on by things that may not turn *you* on… so… get creative.

★ Toys

  • Do you have any sex toys to play with? Your hand doesn’t count :). If so, don’t be shy — whip them out. Maybe not in every single video you make, but every now and then, get kinky and have some fun. Do you like anal play? Get into it. The more you ‘let go’ and be yourself, the more the viewer will be turned on by watching you. And that’s what we’re aiming for.
